How to Hit Topspin: Forehand & Backhand (Power, Depth & Spin)

By Tim Brielmaier3 min read

Topspin is what lets you swing hard and still keep the ball in — it pulls the ball down into the court and gives you margin over the net. But most players either spin without power or power without control. In this lesson, Coach Tim Brielmaier breaks down topspin on both the forehand and backhand, and shows how to practice it solo with a basket of balls.

What Coach Tim covers

  • Spacing and contact point. Setting your feet so the ball is the right distance from your body, with your weight on your front foot — the same spacing every time, whatever the height of the ball.
  • The wiper (low to high). The vertical, brushing motion that creates spin and lifts the ball safely over the net — finishing up and over your other shoulder.
  • Spin vs. power. Close to the net it's mostly spin; as you back up you use more lateral weight shift — the "brick wall" — for power and depth.
  • Depth from the baseline. Backing up and adding more shoulder turn and wrist lag to drive the ball deep while keeping that same spacing.

Why topspin matters

Flat hitting leaves no margin — a little too much pace and the ball sails long. Topspin gives you that margin: you can hit with real pace, clear the net comfortably, and the spin brings the ball down inside the baseline. Grooved against a wall or with a basket of balls, a consistent low-to-high swing path is one of the biggest upgrades a developing player can make. It's especially valuable for players building reliable groundstrokes.

Topspin is most effective once a coach has set your fundamentals — grip, swing path, and contact point — so you're reinforcing good form rather than grooving mistakes.
