The tennis crossover

Why a tennis-trained coach for pickleball

Pickleball is its own sport with its own technique — but most foundational skills carry over from tennis. Footwork, racquet handling, court positioning, doubles strategy, the mental game of returning under pressure. A coach with a deep tennis background and an IPTPA pickleball certification brings both at once: the broader racquet-sport instructional toolkit plus the pickleball-specific technique that newer single-sport coaches are still learning themselves.

In practice that shows up in the way lessons are structured. Beginners get cleaner fundamentals from day one. Tennis players transitioning to pickleball get help unlearning the swings that don't translate (compact strokes, lower contact point, different grip pressure). Experienced pickleballers get tactical coaching on the parts of the game that overlap with doubles tennis — court coverage, partner positioning, shot selection at the kitchen line.

Common questions

Do I need my own paddle?

It helps to have one, but Coach Tim can lend you a paddle for your first session. He'll also advise you on choosing the right paddle for your style.

I've never played — where do I start?

Start with a beginner clinic ($20/person) or a private lesson ($80/hr). Tim starts you from zero: rules, scoring, grip, serve, and your first real game.

How is pickleball different from tennis?

Smaller court, an underhand serve, the non-volley zone (the kitchen), and a wiffle-style ball. Many tennis concepts transfer — but pickleball has its own strategy, and Tim teaches both.

How long until I can play recreational games?

Most complete beginners can join a recreational game after two or three sessions with Tim. He prioritizes getting you game-ready, not just drill-ready.

Do you teach doubles strategy?

Yes — doubles is where most pickleball is played. Tim covers positioning, stacking, communication, and point construction for recreational through competitive doubles.

What happens if it rains?

Sessions cancelled due to weather are rescheduled at no cost. Coach Tim coordinates directly with you to find the next available time.
